Legion of Mary
An association of Catholic laity who serve the Church on a voluntary basis in almost every country.
The Legion of Mary is an international organization founded by Frank Duff, a native of Dublin, Ireland. Along with a group of Catholic women and Fr. Michael Toher, a priest of the Dublin Archdiocese, Frank Duff formed the first branch of what was to become the first praesidium of the Legion of Mary on the eve of the birthdate of our Beloved Mother Mary, September 7, 1921. From then until now the legion operates under the care and supervision of the officers of Concilium Legionis Mariae based in Dublin, Ireland.
The Legion of Mary works in strict accordance to a system written down in a handbook, The Legion Handbook, that is followed by the smallest unit of the legion called a praesidium. Excerpts from the handbook describing this organization and provides more in-depth information are written hereunder.
"The Legion of Mary is an Association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces, have formed themselves into a Legion for service in the warfare which is perpetually waged by the Church against the world and its evil powers.
The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ.
Subject to the approval of the Concilium, and to the restrictions specified in the official handbook of the Legion, the Legion of Mary is at the disposal of the bishop of the diocese and the parish priest for any and every form of social service and Catholic action which these authorities may deem suitable to the legionaries and useful for the welfare of the Church. Legionaries will never engage in any of these services whatsoever in a parish without the sanction of the parish priest or of the Ordinary."
Legion of Mary in Qatar
The Legion of Mary was formed in Qatar through the initiative of the parish priest, Fr. Tom Veneracion. In February 2006 and with the permission of our Bishop Paul Hinder. Fr. Tom called for former legionaries to attend a meeting with the purpose of forming the first praesidium in Doha, Qatar. The praesidium name chosen by the members was “Praesidium Our Lady of the Rosary”, takes on the name of the parish. The praesidium has been registered and recognized by the highest council of the legion based in Dublin, Ireland, the Concilium Legionis. During its initial months of operation the praesidium was directly reporting to the Concilium. About two months later the praesidium was transferred to the care of the Comitium in UAE under the leadership of Bro. Danny Ochoco.
The group started off with about 15 members. Officers were elected accordingly. Some have left but have been replaced by new and no less active and very supportive members. The Praesidium started to grow and on March 25, 2011 on the Feast of Our Lady of Annunciation, we were able to establish another “Praesidium Our Lady of Annunciation”, we have as well on September 8, 2013 on the Feast of Our Lady of Nativity set up a Junior Praesidium “Our Lady of Nativity”. As of today we have a total number of 50-60 members. Apart from the active members performing apostolic works there are also about 85 and more auxiliary members who are the legion’s “prayer warriors” so to speak. The praesidium is also under the supervision of a Spiritual Director, Fr.Anand, who was appointed by the parish priest, Fr. Peter.
The operation and management of the legion is guided by the legion system, which is all written in the legion handbook. All praesidiums worldwide use the same handbook and operate under the same system. Current activities, also termed as apostolic works, the Doha legionaries are involved in are hospital visitation, block rosary, church choir, catechism, enthronement of the Two Hearts, house blessing and supporting the needs of the parish. There are a lot of activities that the members are involved in, and they require much effort and time. Compared to the other places in the Gulf, the praesidium in Doha may be small in number, however it ranks high in acomplishments. Everything that the legionaries do is for the Glory of God.
The future is bright for the Legion of Mary in Qatar as we intend to have another praesidium and set up a Curia and as well establish a Junior Legionary. We invite all practicing Catholics of the Parish to come and attend the legion meetings. You may contact any of the below-stated praesidium officers:
